What’s A "Super Like" & When Should I Use Them On Tinder?

Tinder Super Like – AKA that little blue star – lets your potential matches know you’re *really* into them.

Super-Like-Tinder-blue-star

Does super liking a match really work, or just make you look really creepy? Keep reading to find out when – or if – you should use them on Tinder.

Does Super Liking Someone On Tinder Work?

Tinder claims Super Liking someone makes it 3x more likely you’ll match with them:

Super Like 3x more likely to match

That may or may not be actually true in practice. But there’s no denying it’s extremely obvious that you *really* want the other person to swipe right.

Here’s what happens when you Super Like someone:

First, they’ll get a Super Like notification on their phone. Then, when they log into Tinder and start scrolling, there will be a blue box and blue star on your profile card when it pops up in their feed:

If the object of your heart’s desire also swipes right, they’ll get a reminder that the match resulted because you Super Liked them.

And your name will be tagged with a blue star in their message section as well:

Super Likes are a limited commodity. Free users get one, while Tinder Plus, Gold, and Platinum users get 5 each week included in their membership. Of course, there’s always the option for any user to buy them ala carte as well (pricing may vary by age & location).

On Super Like on Tinder costs $3.33 each, or less per use when you buy in bulk:

But do they really work, and if so, when should you use a Super Like?

There are basically two schools of thought when it comes to the “Should I Super Like on Tinder” debate. Those who feel a Super Like is a good way to cut through the competition clutter, and those who think tapping that blue star = desperation move.

Use Them!

Tinder, obviously, is on the “great idea” side of the fence. According to Tinder CEO Sean Rad, their scarcity makes them effective:

Because they're so limited in number, a Super Like, or a ‘swipe up', sends a more powerful signal, conveying an especially high level of interest. People like to know that someone finds them special…

Elite Daily is also pro Super Like. Although the article’s writer cautions users not to squander it on just any profile:

Send it to someone that you definitely want to chat with, rather than someone who you are feeling a little more lukewarm about. I think a Super Like is a great power move, and I feel flattered any time I get one.

Don't Use Them!

According to Mashable, it’s a “one-way ticket to singledom.” As the writer explains,

Now, when I swipe, that blue bar and star on a profile elicits a silent “eww” as I swipe hard left on the guy. Sorry, but that Super Like just killed any chance of us ever being together.

The experts over at PhotoFeeler are perched on the fence, but leaning toward anti-Super Like. The rationale being it may work in your favor if you tend to turn heads in the street. But it will end up making you look desperate if you’re not going to grace a magazine cover anytime soon:

If you seem attractive, the Super Like is nice. If you do not seem attractive, the Super Like comes across a bit desperate. In other words, if she wasn’t going to swipe right before, she probably won’t do it just because of a Super Like.

Tinder Super Likeable
Tinder's Super Likeable Feature

But for those that aren’t a fan, the Super Likeable game may lessen the perceived desperation of sending one.

Users are periodically presented with a card of four profiles, curated courtesy of Tinder’s own AI-assisted algorithm. Super Liking them is the only option (unless you decide to skip them all entirely), so they’ll likely become a lot more commonplace.

But no matter how you feel about them…

There is one advantage to using a Super Like.

When you tap that blue star on someone’s profile, your profile is moved to the front of that user’s photo stack. They’re guaranteed to at least see your profile. That may not happen if you merely right swipe them.

If you’re in a densely populated area with a ton of local singles to swipe through, that could be your only chance for someone you're particularly interested in to check you out any time soon.

Ooops – I Swiped Up

You meant to swipe left, but you’re in the groove and your finger drifts a little bit up. Or maybe you were just trying to access the control center on your iPhone.

Whatever the case, to your horror you just Super Liked your ex, a coworker, your realtor, or someone else equally embarrassing. Or someone you don't even regular like, much less super like.

Forget about whether or not Super Liking someone works. You just want a Super Like undo, stat.

Here are 2 ways to undo a Super Like:
  • If you’re a Tinder Plus, Gold or Platinum user, simply tap the yellow “rewind” arrow to undo the swipe.
  • If you happen to match via your Super Swipe, go to the message screen, tap the badge to bring up Tinder’s Safety Toolkit, then select “unmatch.”

Not a premium user or you didn’t match? You’re pretty much out of luck. But don’t worry, you’re not alone. Plenty of people take to sites like Reddit to complain about how easy it is to accidentally Super Like someone.

Make Your Tinder Profile Super Likeable

Want local singles to Super Like your profile, on purpose? For starters, don’t choose your own profile pics.

I would date me gif

You have a pretty good idea when you look good in a picture and when you don’t, but you’re not the one scrolling through your Tinder photos.

You look in the mirror several times a day, so your brain fails to register all the tiny imperfections someone who is seeing you for the first time will probably notice.

It could be anything from a slight scowl (RBF is real, people!) to poor posture. And these little details affect how others perceive you, especially when it comes to appearing attractive, competent, and trustworthy.

Research has proven that complete strangers are actually better than you are when it comes to identifying which photos you exhibit those three traits in the most. Ergo, if you want the best Tinder photos possible, ask strangers to choose them.

Tinder Smart Photo

Don’t worry, it’s a lot less creepy than it sounds. All you have to do is turn on Tinder’s Smart Photos feature, which tests all your photos in the #1 spot and then automatically rotates in the winner. Of course, that takes time, and you don't have control over which photo is your primary one.

Also – if all your photos are bad to begin with, crowning the best of the worst won't help your cause any.

If you want faster results and total control of your lineup, use a website like PhotoFeeler that allows the internet at large to chime in.

Then once you’ve gathered enough feedback on your photos, you can polish up your Tinder bio. And, of course, you’ll want your message game on point for when those Super Like induced matches start pouring in.
